This project was a 3 person group, the final piece is a collapsibleĀ dividing screen for shared workspaces, to block out peripheral and visual distractions and help the user to focus on the task at hand. The card paper is cut in a herringbone pattern on the laser cutter to give the most compact and consistent folding. This kind of material also was scorched the least for such a thin and often flammable material meaning that the piece is pleasing to look at from both sides.
With the development in the folding pattern, material for the screen, base and stand shape, and size as well as nesting the whole design for an easily stored product when not in use. The most compact design was the interlocking fingers, which also was one of the most stable because they could have longer balancing pieces.
An issue that was encountered was that the screen fixing points moved when opened and closed, so to solve this we used a runner within the stand design so that these tabs connected to the screen could move freely as the screen expanded and contracted.
As you can see below the product works as intended and allows the user to isolate themselves with their tasks if they struggle with visual distractions nearby. As the screen is only a temporary piece it allows the user to easily still engage in conversation and hear what is happening around them.
